Wash Sale

A wash sale occurs if you sell shares at a loss and buy additional shares (even in another account) of the same or substantially identical security within 30 days before or after the sale.

The Wash Sale Rule prevents an investor from obtaining the benefit of a tax loss without having reduced the investment. Under the rule, the loss is treated as "washed" when the new shares are acquired. The holding period of the originalshares is added to the cost basis of the reacquired shares and is deferred until the reacquired shares are sold.
