Applying for Aid

The Financial Aid Office is in constant contact with students via their FTCC student email. As soon as the data from the students’ Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is received from the Department of Education, an email from FTCC is sent to inform students that their information has been received and the next steps to take. (The confirmation email students receive from the Department of Education confirms the FAFSA has been submitted. The email from the Department of Education is not a confirmation that aid is packaged at FTCC.)

Real-time financial aid data, such as missing documents, Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) status, offer information, Pell lifetime eligibility, loan history and amounts, etc. is available in Self-Service. Students are encouraged to check their email and Self-Service accounts regularly. Stop by the Financial Aid Lab in the Tony Rand Student Center, Room 131, for assistance.

Types of Aid

Upon completion of the FAFSA, your aid package may consist of the following:

• Grants – These are need-based funds and do not have to be repaid. (Unless you withdraw and owe a refund).
• Scholarships – These are funds that can be need, program, or merit based that do not have to be repaid.
• Loans – These funds are borrowed and have to be repaid to your assigned Loan Provider.
• Work Study – Part-Time employment with Fayetteville Technical Community College to gain additional Financial Aid funds.

Eligible Programs

Students who meet all eligibility requirements for Financial Aid may receive funds towards a program of study of the student’s choosing. All Associate Degree programs are eligible for Financial Aid.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Federal and state regulations require an institution to establish a reasonable satisfactory academic progress (SAP) policy to determine whether an eligible student is progressing satisfactorily in his or her academic program to receive assistance under the Title IV, Higher Education Act programs. A student is expected to maintain a minimum level of progress towards completion of a degree, diploma, or certificate program that is eligible for financial aid.

In order to be eligible for financial aid, students must meet the minimum guidelines:

1. Qualitative Standard – Must not be suspended according to the College’s academic suspension procedure. In addition, a student must maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0.
2. Quantitative Standard (financial aid pace) – Completion of a minimum percentage of work is measured to ensure that a student completes his or her program of study within the maximum timeframe allowed based on the published length of the student’s academic program. The number of hours attempted is defined as the total cumulative number of credit hours for which you were enrolled at the generic 10% point of each term. The total number of hours earned is defined as the total cumulative number of credit hours for which the student received a passing grade as noted on the student’s academic transcript. Must earn 67% of the total cumulative credit hours attempted (including all transfer credits). For example, if the student attempted 30 credits, he or she must earn at least 20 credits of the 30 credits attempted (30 x 67% = 20).
3. Maximum Time Frame – Must complete a program of study in a timeframe not to exceed 150% of the published length of the program, excluding the first 30 attempted credit hours of developmental education. This will be measured in credit hours (e.g., if the academic program length requires 60 credit hours, then the maximum time frame cannot exceed 90 credit hours attempted). Transfer credits accepted by FTCC from other institutions are included in the maximum timeframe calculation.
4. Monitoring – The Financial Aid Office will monitor satisfactory academic progress every semester (including summer).
5. Change of Major – Students who change their major are still responsible for maintaining satisfactory academic progress according to the policy as outlined. A review of satisfactory academic progress will be based on the student’s program of study. Changing from an associate degree program to a diploma or a certificate program may result in a student losing their federal and state eligibility.

*Financial aid disbursem*nts will vary depending on enrollment status, such as when financial aid is packaged, course section start date, enrollment level, etc. Students are responsible for dropping and withdrawing from classes in a timely manner to avoid financial aid overpayments.

• An email from the Office of Business and Finance will be sent on the afternoon of the disbursem*nt date to students who are eligible for a refund.
• Students can select direct deposit as a refund preference.
• Please allow 2-3 business days from the date of disbursem*nt for funds to be available at your banking institution.
• Loans will be disbursed in three installments fall and spring terms and two installments during the summer session.
• Students will not be eligible to receive a refund on every scheduled disbursem*nt date.
• Disbursem*nt dates will vary based on the financial aid package, enrollment status, and the course section census dates of classes.
• Disbursem*nts are scheduled to occur after the course section census dates for classes that have started and after the applicable students have been counted as enrolled by the Registrar’s Office.
