Who must complete an I-94 arrival and departure form? ›

Visiting the U.S. & Arriving Via a Land Border or Selected Ferry? A Form I-94 is needed by all visitors except: U.S. Citizens, returning resident aliens, aliens with immigrant visas, and most Canadian citizens visiting or in transit. Travelers will be issued an I-94 during the admission process at the port of entry.

Travelers may visit www.cbp.gov/I94 to retrieve their electronic I-94 number. Upon entering the U.S., travelers will receive a paper with instructions on how to access the website. Individuals can visit www.cbp.gov/I94 to retrieve a copy of their electronic Form I-94.

If you are traveling by land, you can apply for an I-94 in person at your point of entry. Or you can apply within 7 days before entering the U.S. through the official I-94 website or the CBP One app. When you do so, you will pay a $6 fee.

If you can't find your I-94 record, you may be able to search for it on CBP's website or obtain it by filing Form I-102 or a FOIA request. If none of those options work, you can also try proving lawful entry through affidavits and other evidence such as plane tickets.

Useful tips for locating your I-94: Wait 2-3 days after arrival in the U.S. for the system to update with your information. Enter the name as stated in the passport, visa, or the submitted Form DS-160.

VWP travelers are encouraged to use the I-94 website or CBP One™ mobile app to apply for an I-94 in advance. If a traveler would like a paper Form I-94, the traveler can print their own I-94 Form from the I-94 website using "Get Most Recent I-94" or by using the same option on the CBP One™ mobile application.

If you need to replace a paper Form I-94 that was issued to you upon admission to the United States or that was issued to you by USCIS, you must apply for a replacement Form I-94 with USCIS by using Form I-102.

USCIS issued I-94 documents are not entered into the CBP online I-94 database, which is why your USCIS issued I-94 cannot be found and viewed. You can use the USCIS issued Entry/Departure Record Form I-94 on the Notice of Action Form I-797 as evidence of your current legal status in the United States.

After your entry in the US, the U.S. Custom and Border Protection issue an electronic Lawful Record of Admission called I-94 (no paper will be given to you). You can print copies of this I-94 online.

You do not need an I-94 travel record if you are:

A Lawful permanent resident (green card holder) An individual with an immigrant visa. A Canadian citizen visiting or in transit. Travelers under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP); they get an I-94W instead, which is usually processed online.

This check will inform travelers of how many days are remaining on their admission or how many days they have remained past their admit until date.
