Are there waves in Surfside Beach Texas? ›

The best time of year for surfing Surfside Jetty with consistent clean waves (rideable swell with light / offshore winds) is during Winter and most often the month of February. Clean surfable waves are typically found 15% of the time in February while 46% of the time it tends to be blown out.

Wave period is measured in seconds and is the gap between one wave and the next. Simply said the wave period is the amount in seconds that pass between each wave. The higher the wave period, the more energy in the swell and so the larger the wave and more often than not this results in better quality waves for surfing.

Offshore winds are ideal for surfing because they groom the waves surface and can result in a barreling wave. Ideal conditions for surfing would include absolutely no wind. This is called glassy conditions, and a surfers dream scenario. However if you do have a little wind, it's not the end of your surfing world.

Well known as the best surf in Texas, South Padre Island has the biggest, most powerful, most consistent and best shaped waves by far than anywhere else on the Texas Gulf Coast (***see below!).

Camping is not permitted on the beach within the Village of Surfside Beach boundaries. Camping is permitted on the county beach located east of the city limits at Beach Access Entrance 1, located about 4.0 miles east of Highway 332 on County Road 257 (Bluewater Highway).

As a general rule, if it's only 1ft, it's pretty difficult to surf on, unless you longboard or are a lightweight grom/ shredding machine! As a start, you'd have to say that once we're getting into the 4-5 foot wave range, then that would be considered 'big' by most. But the size of the waves doesn't tell the whole story, and you may be able to handle swimming in bigger waves if other factors are in your favour.

Wave Scoring

The wave scoring is done with five quality levels in mind: 0-1.9 (Poor), 2-3.9 (Fair), 4-5.9 (Average), 6-7.9 (Good), 8–10 (Excellent). The judges analyze the following major elements when they are evaluating a surfer's wave: 1. Commitment and degree of difficulty. 2.

Shallow Water and Sandbars: Be cautious when surfing in shallow areas, as you risk hitting the ocean floor or submerged obstacles like rocks or sandbars. This can lead to injuries. Marine Life: Some areas may have marine life such as jellyfish, sharks, or other potentially harmful creatures.

Is it better to surf at high or low tide? ›

Not necessarily — it depends on where you plan to surf. High tides are great if you're headed towards a reef break. The only exception is if it's near a bluff, in which case the waves rarely break before hitting land. Conversely, medium to low tides are better if you're surfing near a beach break.

As long as the wind doesn't get too strong, say over 20 knots, you'll be fine. Any stronger and it will be hard to take-off. The other winds are either onshore – from the sea to the land, or cross-shore – blowing from either side. If these winds are blowing any stronger than 10 knots it can chop the waves up fast.

Surfside Beach produces some of the best, most consistent surf on the upper Texas coast. It works on small swells and holds double overhead and better. Two factors are responsible for this fact: deep water and long jetties.

Some Rules To Remember While at Surfside Beach: There are no lifeguards on duty, swim at your own risk. Glass containers are NOT allowed on the beaches. All dunes are protected and off-limits to pedestrians and vehicles.

The waves might be less consistent and more choppy on the Texas coast, but for local and state surfers, Galveston's beaches allow great access to the waves. With over 32 miles of beaches, there are many places you could go to catch a wave. One of the most popular spots for surfing is around Pleasure Pier.

It gets really crowded on weekends so get there early to get a good spot.
