Best hospital in Europe
Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin placed sixth in the international Newsweek rankings, moving up a spot from last year and once again placing in the top ten. Berlin’s university medicine organization also tops the rankings for Europe. American weekly magazine Newsweek and data portal Statista compared the best 2,400 hospitals worldwide. The annual ranking highlights a hospital’s international reputation and the network maintained by its staff and researchers.
Professor Heyo K. Kroemer, Chief Executive Officer of Charité, says: “We’ve placed in the top ten hospitals worldwide six times in a row now. That’s every year since the Newsweek rankings first started, in 2019. This is a wonderful recognition of what we’ve achieved – and, of course, just as big an incentive to get even better. It’s impressive how our Charité team manages to achieve top performance here in Berlin, a hub of healthcare and research activity, and remain competitive worldwide in spite of all the challenges we face. I’d especially like to thank the more than 22,000 hardworking and dedicated employees who work across the entire Charité group, providing exceptional patient care each and every day and putting their energy into important medical research questions and teaching activities.”
In all, 2,400 hospitals across 30 countries were evaluated for the World’s Best Hospitals 2024 rankings. The Mayo Clinic, based in the United States, is ranked first. The institutions in Europe that placed in the top ten were Charité, in sixth place, followed by Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset, in Stockholm, in seventh place; Hôpital Universitaire Pitié Salpêtrièr, in Paris, in eighth; and Universitätsspital Zürich coming in tenth.
The rankings have been published annually since 2019. They are based on medical recommendations, surveys of patient satisfaction, and key indicators of medical performance relating to treatment quality and hygiene measures. Votes for a person’s own institution were not permitted.
