Orlando Sentinel After returning to Gainesville, she was the first black registered nurse hired to work at Sunland Training Center, an institution for the severely physically and mentally disabled. Jenkins moved to Orlando in the 1960s, after the death of her second husband, her daughter said, and went to work for Sun-land Hospital here, supervising other black workers. She was an active member of Mount Olive AME Church, where she sang in the choir, and Churchwomen United. After she retired in 1974, Jenkins helped organize Mount Olive's senior citizen ministry and became a deaconess.

"My mother remembered a lot about Rosewood," Dotson said. "There were large homes with lace curtains, and she played in her grandfather's parlor, which had a grand piano." Jenkins' grandfather owned and operated a large turpentine operation in Rosewood. Jenkins, who later became a public health nurse, took her memories and her Rosewood legacy with her and never forgot the town of her birth, her daughter said. "She always said the Rosewood story is not about a massacre; it is about a large, successful black community with college-educated people." As a young woman, Jenkins helped start the Hanco*ck County Clinic in Sparta, which still stands today. By SANDRA MATHERS SENTINEL STAFF WRITER Eva Ernestine Jenkins remembered the whispering, frightened people arriving at her aunt's Gainesville home clad only in their night clothes Only later did the 13-year-old girl learn that her aunt's "visitors" had survived the massacre in her hometown of Rosewood in North Florida that New Year's Day in 1923 by jumping on an unscheduled train to escape the white mob that destroyed the mostly black town.

Jenkins, formerly of Orlando, was the oldest survivor of that once-affluent black community until her death Feb. 13 in California. She was 95. "Her mother died in childbirth," said Jenkins' daughter, Alexis Dotson of Upland, Calif. "At 6, she went to live with her aunt in Gainesville." Jenkins never returned to Rosewood.

She was born in Sanford on February 16, 1924, to Sanford and Lucille Doudney. She graduated from Florida State College for Women in 1945, married George Dangleman and lived in several different states as a "Navy wife" before returning to Sanford in 1956. Her life was devoted to her family. She retired from Central Florida Regional Hospital in 1986, enjoyed gardening and playing tennis, and was an active member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church.

She is predeceased by her brother, Al, and her daughter, Luanne. She is survived by her sons, Gary of Sanford, Lee of Maitland, James of Fountain Inn, SC, and Steve of Osteen; her daughters, Fran Henry of DeBary, and Doris Brady of Sanford; 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. RONALD RAY, 77, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2005 in Orlando. Dr. Cagle was born October 4, 1927 in Richmond, VA. He was a veteran Lt. Commander with the Medical Corp in the US Navy.

A graduate of the University of Virginia Medical School, Dr. Cagle practiced medicine as a pediatrician in the Central Florida area for 35 years. His love for pediatric medicine brought him recognition anywhere he went and was loved by all his patients. Dr. Cagle was the first pediatric resident at Orlando Regional Medical Center, formerly known as Orange Memorial Hospital.

He enjoyed traveling, especially cruises; one of his favorite spots was Wilkesboro, NC to visit family. Dr. Cagle was a member the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Wilkesboro, NC. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Helen Minton Cagle of Orlando; daughters, Susan Michelle Cagle of Tampa, FL and Amanda Cagle Jones and her husband, Scott of Orlando, FL; seven grandchildren, Mark and Jessica Jones and Terry, Ann, Tonya, Scott and Christopher Cagle, and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark James Cagle.

After his service to his country, he graduated from Massachusetts College of Art, and worked in the advertising department of General Electric for 10 years before moving to Orlando. He owned and operated his own advertising agency for many years before retiring in 1975. He and his wife, Lisa, traveled around the US by motor home for two years after which they returned to Florida. Hiking several portions of the Appalachian Trail was one of his passions. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Larson Anderson (also born in Sweden); his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Joan Anderson of Orlando; and two daughters and sons-in law, Susan and Bill Dawkins of Atlanta, GA, Patty and Russ Charest, of Clermont, FL, and two grandsons, Scott Dawkins of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jeffrey Dawkins of Atlanta, GA and a sister, Mary Longmuir, of Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 11, 1922, he was the son of Howard and Hazel Hall and the brother of Howard Hall. James served his country in World War II as a naval aviator, flying PBY sea-planes for the 27th Patrol Bombing Squadron in the South Pacific. After the war he graduated from the University of Minnesota with an engineering degree and worked for Northern States Power. In 1957, James and wife Marilyn relocated with their boys to Winter Park, and James spent the next 31 years working for Martin Marrieta as an engineer and marketing manager. James served on the board and as an officer of the Win-San Condominium Association for many years.

James was active in the United Church of Christ, serving as a national delegate, and assistant treasurer of the Florida conference of the United Church of Christ. James loved music and sang for years in the church choir. He also helped start and built the sanctuary of the Longwood Hills Congregational United Church of Christ. James is survived by his wife Mamie, to whom he was married for 58 years, and by sons James, Stephen, and Richard, daughter-in-laws Janet and Betsy, and grandchildren Lauren, Sarah, Tyler, and Madeline. James was a member of the First Congregational Church of Winter Park, United Church of Christ, where his memorial service will be held on Monday, February 28, at 11AM.

Internment will follow at Glen-nhaven Memorial Cemetery. He worked for the Michigan Department of Labor for 36 years, retiring in 1982 as the Director of the Bureau of Safety and Regulation. Eldridge Williams, 87, trained many of those pilots. The Army drafted him before the war and picked him to be an aviation cadet based on his high test scores.

But that was before the Army was accepting black cadets. When he showed up for a flight physical, they turned him away. Williams said they made up a mysterious ailment as an excuse. "They didn't know what I was," he said. "The commandant said, 'You're rejected because you have cupping of the optic disc' No one had ever heard of the term." Later, Williams went through officer training and transferred to Tuskegee.

On Friday, students mingled with the Tuskegee Airmen after their talk, requesting autographs and photos with the men. Angel Streeter is a reporter for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, a Tribune Publishing newspaper. and to issue an executive order two years later desegregating the military, Watson said. Two of the original members of the all-black flying squadron were at Florida Atlantic University on Friday as part of the university's Black History Month celebrations. More than 50 people listened to the men tell stories about overcoming obstacles and battling stereotypes.

"I didn't even know we were making history at the time," said Richard Rutledge, 82, who became one of the Army's first black warrant officers. "I was doing my job. You always knew you had to be better than your white peers." The men were part of a U.S. Army Air Corps experiment at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, testing whether black men had the capability and intelligence to fly airplanes. The result was a group of pilots who received presidential citations and hundreds of air medals and Distinguished Flying Crosses during World War II.

Martin Luther King Jr. marched down the streets of Selma, and before Freedom Riders traveled south to challenge segregation. The Tuskegee Airmen were breaking racial barriers during World War II as the first black fighter pilots in the U.S. military, racking up impressive war records, but also setting in motion historical precedents.

"What the Tuskegee Airmen did was help create the first civil-rights legislation," said Robert Watson, a political-science professor at Florida Atlantic University. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2PM Monday in the Grissom Chapel with The Rev. Rodney Rowe, officiating.
