The producers followed up A Very English Scandal in 2021 with the series A Very British Scandal, about the Argyll divorce case. On November 20, 2023, it was announced Blueprint will produce a third Scandal series, A Very Royal Scandal based on the infamous Prince Andrew interview with Emily Maitlis.

Divorce from the Duke of Argyll

The evidence discovered resulted in the 1963 divorce case, in which the Duke accused his wife of infidelity and included a set of Polaroid photographs of the duch*ess naked, save for her signature three-strand pearl necklace, in the company of another man.

Phelps says the court transcripts from the 1963 divorce hearing were key to her research and the script. She took the transcripts, extrapolating the detail and working backward from there. With that, much of the series stayed true to real-life events.

Following the Liberals' poor election performance Thorpe came under fire, but such criticisms were stifled when, ten days after the election, Caroline Thorpe was killed in a car crash. For the rest of 1970 and for much of 1971, Thorpe was preoccupied with his loss and his plan for a permanent memorial to Caroline.

After further newspaper revelations, Thorpe was forced to resign the Liberal leadership in May 1976, and subsequent police investigations led to him being charged, along with three others, with conspiracy to murder Scott. Before the case came to trial, Thorpe lost his parliamentary seat at the 1979 general election.

In the second episode, Scott's canine was murdered by a dog-phobic gunman in Exmoor, an unfortunate consequence of one of Jeremy Thorpe's (Hugh Grant) unsuccessful attempts to dispose of his former lover.

As far as I know, "A Very British Scandal" is a follow-up to this show, but it has nothing to do with it. It's a completely different story, being based on the real divorce of Ian Campbell, Duke of Argyll and Margaret Campbell, duch*ess of Argyll, taking, of course, liberty in portraying the whole case.
