On September 11, 2001, nineteen menhijacked four planes and crashed them into the World Trade Centers in New York City, into the Pentagon nearWashington DC, and in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.^ One week later, the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution to "authorize the use of United States Armed Forces against those responsible for the recent attacks launched against the United States."^^

Operation Freedom's Sentinel "began on January 1, 2015, when the United States formally ended its combat mission, Operation Enduring Freedom, and joined with other nations as part of the NATO Resolute Support Mission."^
