What are the four types of evacuation? ›

These common elements allow you to prepare for and protect yourself and your animals from disaster. Emergency managers think of disasters as recurring events with four phases: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery. The following diagram illustrates the relationship of the four phases of emergency management.

R.A.C.E.: Remove, Alarm, Confine and Extinguish or Evacuate

stands for 'Remove, Alarm, Confine and Extinguish or Evacuate. This easy to remember acronym is our University procedure in the case of a fire.

Leave the building through the nearest door with an EXIT sign. Do not use elevators. Go to the nearest safe stairway. Help those who need special assistance, such as disabled persons and small children.

Emergency evacuation is an immediate egress or escape of people away from an area that contains an imminent threat, an ongoing threat or a hazard to lives or property.

These key messages underpin each of the five stages of evacuation planning: from the decision to evacuate, through to the warning, withdrawal, shelter and return. Evacuation is a complex process and careful planning will aid community engagement and minimise risks associated with the evacuation process.

Current thinking defines four phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. There are entire courses on each of these phases. The following diagram illustrates the four phases of emergency management. The following table briefly describes each of these phases.

These are the procedures / requirements which are in place. These alone will not make you safe, they are a means to an end and also guide the other P's – prevention, preparation and practice.

Step Four: Assign Roles and Responsibilities

The identified individual (or group of individuals) will be required to supervise the evacuation efforts, coordinate outside emergency services, and manage the shutdown of services/operations if deemed necessary.

Start with the five P's; people and pet supplies, prescriptions, papers, personal needs and priceless items. Check with your neighbors, family, friends and elders through video chats or phone calls to ensure they are READY.

Also, try to extinguish the fire if possible. And if total evacuation is necessary for a fire emergency, vertical evacuation is a priority. Followed by horizontal evacuation and then complete evacuation.
